Your first dyno tune
Arrive with a mechanically healthy car, the exact fuel and hardware you plan to run, and a written goal. A tuner can calibrate the setup; they cannot tune around a loose clamp, weak cylinder, overheating system, or failing tire.
Send the shop the complete build sheet before booking. Include the car, engine, ECU, fuel system, injectors, turbo or supercharger, boost control, intake, intercooler, exhaust, sensors, transmission, drivetrain, tires, and current calibration. Surprises are expensive when the car is already strapped down.

Agree on the job before the appointment
“Make the most power” is not a complete target. Tell the tuner how the car is used, which fuel will always be available, the operating conditions it sees, and which limits matter to you.
- Street drivability, track use, towing, endurance, drag use, or another specific duty
- Fuel grade or ethanol target, and whether separate calibrations are needed
- Boost level, rev limit, torque limits, transmission needs, and factory-system integration
- Known weak points, previous failures, unusual noises, active codes, and recent repairs
- Required emissions equipment and the legal use of the vehicle
- What the price includes if mechanical work or another session becomes necessary
Ask who will own and back up the calibration, what data will be logged, what happens if the car cannot be tuned safely, and which files or report you receive.

Prove the engine is healthy enough to load
Dyno tuning puts the engine through controlled load across operating areas. Existing mechanical problems often become clearer and more expensive under that load.
No unexplained oil, coolant, fuel, air, vacuum, boost, or exhaust leak
No overheating, unstable oil pressure, misfire, serious warning, abnormal noise, or smoke
Compression and leak-down results when the engine builder or tuner requires them, interpreted for this engine rather than a generic internet number
Verified mechanical timing, base timing, sensor calibration, and trigger setup when the ECU or build requires them
Recent service completed with the correct parts and fluids, with no unfinished installation work
If one cylinder differs, a warning returns, or the car has a mechanical symptom under ordinary driving, diagnose it before tuning. A calibration is not a repair.

Pressure-test the air path and inspect the exhaust
Check the intake, MAF housing when equipped, charge pipes, intercooler, throttle body, bypass or blow-off valve, vacuum lines, boost-control plumbing, and every clamp. Use the test method and pressure appropriate for the system.
Inspect the exhaust for leaks ahead of sensors and the turbo where equipped. A leak can distort the data the tuner is using and point the calibration in the wrong direction. Secure the exhaust, heat shields, sensor wiring, and any part close to a dyno strap or hot component.

Cooling, fuel, ignition, and electrical systems need margin

Do not copy another build’s plug gap, fuel pressure, or ethanol target. Use the engine builder, component manufacturer, and tuner responsible for this setup.

The rest of the car still has to survive the dyno
Tires in safe condition, set to the shop’s procedure, with no cords, bulges, serious cracking, or active rubbing
Wheel hardware installed and torqued correctly, wheel bearings sound, and no loose spacer or adapter
Axles, driveshaft, joints, differential, transmission, mounts, and clutch operating without a known fault
Brakes working normally and the car able to drive straight
Ride height, bodywork, cooling ducts, and tie-down points compatible with the shop’s dyno
Loose cabin and cargo items removed before the session
Tell the shop about all-wheel drive, staggered tire diameters, active differentials, traction-control behavior, low clearances, center-lock wheels, air suspension, or a transmission with a required dyno mode before arriving.

Bring a clean record of the build
- Build sheet with brands, exact part numbers, sizes, and installation dates
- ECU, access device, software license, cable, login, and recovery information the tuner requested
- Current calibration and previous logs, plus the name of the person who created them
- Fuel details, recent ethanol test when relevant, and receipts if the source matters
- Compression or leak-down report, alignment data, and recent diagnostic records when requested
- Wheel-lock key, tow point, spare plugs or parts the tuner named, and a safe ride home if the car stays
Label files with the date and setup. “final-final-good-map” stops being funny the first time someone has to recover the car.

Let the tuner stop the session
A responsible session can end because of heat, knock, lean operation, pressure loss, misfire, wheel slip, tire concern, fluid leak, drivetrain noise, a sensor problem, or hardware that cannot support the target. That is useful information, not a failed appointment.
Do not pressure the operator into one more run for a round number or a video. Fix the cause, confirm the repair, and return under conditions the tuner accepts.

Leave with instructions, not only a horsepower number
Final calibration and backup file, with version and date
Dyno graph and available logs with fuel, boost, correction, and relevant test notes
Required fuel, ethanol range, plug, boost, rev, warmup, and maintenance instructions
Configured warnings, limits, fail-safes, map switching, and what each setting does
Known limits, unresolved items, follow-up logging, and conditions that require the tuner to review the map
After the session, drive normally, confirm street behavior where lawful, and inspect for leaks, loose clamps, tire contact, or heat damage. A dyno calibration may still need careful drivability refinement in real operating conditions.

Use the tuner, builder, and component instructions for your car
This checklist does not teach engine calibration and cannot approve a setup for dyno use. High-load tuning can damage an unhealthy or incorrectly configured vehicle. Use a qualified operator who can stop when the data or car is unsafe.
