Lowering springs vs. coilovers
Springs give you a fixed drop. Coilovers usually let you set ride height and may add damping adjustment. The better choice is the one that fits the car, the roads, and the job you expect it to do.
Lowering springs are usually the simpler route to a modest, fixed ride height when the spring and damper combination is approved for the exact car. Coilovers cost more but add height adjustment, and some add damping adjustment. A cheap coilover is not automatically an upgrade over a well-matched spring and damper kit.

Price the full job, not the box. Labor, top mounts, bearings, bump stops, dust boots, adjustment parts, alignment, damaged fasteners, and tires can change the decision quickly.
Write down what you want the car to do
“Lower” is not enough. Choose a ride-height goal that leaves the car usable on your roads and describe the driving that matters: daily commuting, long trips, autocross, track days, weekend use, passengers, cargo, or show parking.
- How much driveway, speed-bump, and road-crown clearance do you have now?
- Are the current dampers, mounts, bushings, ball joints, and wheel bearings healthy?
- Will the wheel and tire combination still clear at full steering lock and suspension compression?
- Does the car use adaptive dampers, ride-height sensors, headlight leveling, or driver-assistance systems?
- Is a fixed height acceptable, or will the setup actually be adjusted for different use?
If the stock suspension is worn, repair needs belong in the plan. New springs cannot restore a leaking damper or remove play from a mount.
Lowering springs work well when the combination is known
A spring maker may design a particular kit to work with factory dampers on a named vehicle, or it may call for shortened or matched dampers. Read the application page and installation instructions for the exact part number. Do not turn a general claim about the brand into approval for every drop and trim.
The advertised drop is a forecast, not a measurement of your finished car. Trim weight, options, existing ride height, worn components, isolators, tire diameter, and installation details can change the result. Measure from the wheel center to the fender before and after, on the same level surface and under the conditions the manufacturer specifies.
Coilovers buy adjustment, not a guaranteed result
A street coilover package combines a spring and damper with a way to set ride height. Some kits use fixed damping. Others provide one combined adjuster or separate compression and rebound controls. Read what the specific kit changes instead of assuming every visible knob controls the same thing.
Use only the manufacturer’s approved height and adjustment range. The lowest position in the catalog photo may leave too little travel, poor spring retention, damaged axles, contact at the body, or an alignment the car cannot reach. Preload, body length, spring perch, and height adjustment are not universal across coilover designs.
More settings can be useful on a car that is measured and tested. They can also give the owner more ways to create an uneven, harsh, or poorly controlled setup. Record the baseline settings and change only what the manufacturer or qualified setup professional supports.
Lowering changes more than fender gap
The bump stop becomes part of the conversation.
Less available compression travel can make the car hit its stops more often. Use the stops, boots, spring seats, and travel specified for the kit. Do not cut parts based on a universal internet rule.
Toe and camber can move with ride height.
Measure and align the car after installation and settling as directed. Excess toe can wear a tire quickly even when the new camber is what everyone notices.
A parked car does not show the whole envelope.
Check inside and outside clearance through steering movement and suspension travel. Tire shape, passengers, cargo, and body roll can expose contact that is invisible on level ground.
The oil pan, exhaust, subframe, and jack points move closer to the road.
Measure the parts that matter, not only the rocker panel. Plan for ramps, driveways, road debris, towing, lifting, and the route to your alignment shop.
The car may need procedures beyond an alignment.
Ride-height sensors, adaptive dampers, headlight aim, camera or radar calibration, and stability systems vary by vehicle. Check the service information for the exact model.
The surrounding parts decide whether the install stays quiet and safe
Suspension work disturbs loaded fasteners, mounts, lines, wires, and joints. Eibach’s published installation guidance tells installers to preserve brake-line and wiring routes, tighten pivot points at the proper loaded position, use factory torque specifications, measure ride height, perform an alignment, and recheck hardware as directed.
Inspect mounts, bearings, isolators, bushings, ball joints, tie rods, links, boots, stops, and dampers before ordering.
Confirm exact fitment by model year, trim, drive type, axle load, adaptive-suspension option, and every manufacturer note.
Record the original ride height, alignment, wheel and tire specifications, and any existing contact or uneven wear.
Have the installer follow the vehicle and suspension maker’s spring-compressor, routing, torque, loaded-bushing, and adjustment procedures.
After settling as directed, measure all corners, inspect clearances and lines, align the car, and keep the printout.
Reinspect and retorque only on the schedule and by the method specified by the component maker.
Compressed springs store dangerous energy. Installation belongs with someone who has the correct equipment, vehicle service information, and experience with suspension assemblies.

Ride-height, bumper, lighting, tire-coverage, inspection, and modification rules vary by country, state, and locality. A manufacturer certificate accepted in one place may mean nothing in another. Insurance and warranty terms can also change after suspension work.
